CLASSIC BOOK DUST COVER

A dust cover is one way to increase the value of a physical book. This project designs a dust cover for the classic novel, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, to promote physical sales in the 2020 market.

MY PROCESS

RESEARCH

To capture the novel’s relevance for modern readers I researched the novel’s author, historical context, and plot, as well as design trends for the target market year.

DRAFTING

Drafts began as thumbnail sketches. Special consideration was given to fold lines; connectivity from panel to panel would encourage readers to look at the entire dust cover and receive full benefits of the product.

ITERATION

Early digital designs were created in illustrator. Sometimes, spreads were transferred into basic mockups to help review the product’s appearence.

The final design was transferred into Photoshop and a physical mockup was printed. Both deliverables help a client visualize how the design interacts with folds and the user’s experience.
